Brakpan, South Africa

For the last part of my trip I have been graciously hosted by Bob and Brenda Bagley in Brakpan, South Africa.  Besides working on a few small projects for Bob, I've been preparing for my classes which will begin this week! Otherwise, I've been resting and enjoying making feeble attempts to beat Bob and Brenda at a card game :)

I've had a good time exploring a new area of Africa and learning about the culture here.  This area is very wealthy.  The brand new malls enhance the appearance of the wealth, and make for a much different experience of "This Is Africa." However, you don't have to drive far to find more impoverished areas.

We visited the Nelson Mandela house in Soweto.  This is the house where Mandela lived with his first and then his second wife.  I learned a bit more about Mandela and Apartheid.  It has been interesting to see the ways this painful part of South Africa's history is still affecting people today.  But the rubble left behind from many apartheid era prisons are evidence that they have come a long way.

Tomorrow I hop on a plane and head back to Zambia!  I'm SO excited to return.  The next week or so will be pretty hectic while I settle back into my apartment and get started with my classes, but I'm very eager to see my friends again :) This time in South Africa has been a blessing.  Besides giving my body a chance to adjust slowly, I've been able to explore new places and meet many wonderful people!
